Newsela Professional Learning improves teacher usage

This study examines the impact of Newsela professional learning (PL) on subsequent teacher usage of the platform.

Using a matched comparison group design, researchers evaluated whether teachers who attended PL sessions used Newsela more frequently and more deeply than teachers who did not.

Key Findings

This study found that:

  • Teachers who attended at least one PL session used Newsela approximately 12% more than those who did not
  • Teachers who returned to Newsela within 30 days of PL used the platform over 4× more than non-returners
  • PL participants were 50% more likely to grade writing responses
  • PL participants were 15% more likely to create assignments
  • Findings support Newsela PL as a lever for increasing instructional impact and implementation fidelity
