Momentum Grows as Historic Back-to-School 20/21 Begins

New York, NY – Newsela, the leading instructional content platform that serves nearly 37 million students in the U.S., closed Q2 2020 with new business from districts across the nation. Demand for Newsela was fueled by interest in a flexible, accessible content solution that allows educators to transition seamlessly from the classroom to distance learning, while motivating and engaging all students in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Providing educators with adaptable, accessible content and distance learning resources to ensure instructional continuity for every student and family was our singular focus company-wide during this critical time.” said Matthew Gross, CEO and Founder, Newsela. “We’re heartened that districts across the U.S. have chosen Newsela as they prepare for disruption in the future, while staying connected to students and adjusting to evolving curricular priorities.”

Some of the new and expanded districts that have purchased Newsela for schools in their districts in Q2 2020 include:

  • Brunswick County Schools, NC

  • Cabell County Schools, WV

  • Consolidated School District of New Britain, CT

  • Davis School District, UT

  • Elgin U46, IL

  • Groveport Madison School District, OH

  • Henrico County Public Schools, VA

  • Iredell-Statesville School District, NC

  • Kansas City Public Schools, MO

  • Los Angeles Unified School District, CA

  • Ogden School District, UT

  • Olathe Public Schools, KS

  • Old Bridge Township School District, NJ

  • Preston County Schools, WV

  • Richland School District, WA

  • San Francisco Unified School District, CA

  • Wicomico County Public Schools, MD

Since the rise of the COVID-19 pandemic, Newsela has been used for distance learning in ⅔ of US schools, with 50% of ELA teachers using the instructional content platform for remote teaching. Educators were able to continue social-emotional learning in core instruction, monitor student progress and engagement to provide feedback, and maintain a baseline for instructional rigor, even in remote settings.

“When we see the number of schools and teachers using Newsela for remote learning, it reminds us of the need for equitable, authentic content that’s manifestly more responsive to the unpredictability of our world and the need to reach and engage all students,” said Dan Cogan-Drew, Chief Academic Officer and Co-Founder.
