Sales Director

We’re not like other companies. And you’re not like other sales leaders. We are Newsela, a venture-backed junta of nonconformists aiming to upend literacy learning as we know it. Our web-based literacy solution, now in open Beta, has caught wildfire in schools in all 50 states and 57 countries and in the press. You and the team you build are about to begin selling Newsela, and you’re going to crush it.

The Job

When your friends ask you about your job at Newsela a year from now, here’s what you’ll say:

“I’m in charge of sales. Starting from scratch, I built a well-oiled inside sales machine that is smart and motivated and mind-blowingly technologically advanced. No one in K-12 education has ever sold anything the way we do, and now everyone is trying to copy our secret sauce.”

“We sell directly to schools. I started off doing a lot of inside sales myself, alongside the one or two of the sales reps I hired, because I wanted to get to know what our customers are like and build our sales process from my own experience. Now I run a big team, but I still like to hop on the phone from time to time to stay in touch with the market.”

“I spend a lot of my day working with the product development team on super-smart ways to identify leads and make the selling and buying process easier and better for us and our customers.”

“I work closely with the CEO (my awesome boss) and the other business development guys, who are responsible for reeling in the really big fish like big school districts and education publishers. They’re smart and well-connected guys, but they need my expertise in pricing and closing the deal.”

“’I’m expanding our sales into other markets, like the $36 billion English language learning market, libraries, military bases and a few of others.”

“This is the best job I’ve ever had. By far.”

Who You Are

When we talk to your former bosses, colleagues and employees, here’s what they’ll say:

“He’s a pro. He’s been selling SaaS or web solutions to non-tech-savvy customers for at least seven years and has been running sales teams and operations for at least three.”

“She’s an innovator. I can’t count on both hands the number of ways she improved our sales process and technology. I got exhausted just hearing all of her ideas—I wish we had the time and money to do them all.”

“He’s a motivator. He always found some way to make me a better sales rep. I agreed to higher targets than I thought were possible, but magically I always seemed to beat them.”

“She’s a collaborator. She came to my department to figure out how our systems and teams could work better together. It caught me off guard because I’m not used to sales guys coming to me for anything except needs and complaints.”

“He’s one of the best I’ve ever had. He consistently beat expectations by a mile. I have loads of evidence to prove it.”

Assessment Producer

We’re Newsela, a fast-moving startup that’s dead set on a single lofty goal: unlock the written word for everyone. We take daily news and publish it at five levels of complexity so that readers of all abilities can engage in the same content and push themselves to read at an increasingly higher degree of sophistication.

Less than a year since our launch, we are already in tens of thousands of schools in all 50 states and more than 100 countries.

Register at Newsela.com and explore the product. Ask yourself if it’s something you would have loved as a student. If the answer’s yes, come join us.

Your Role

You’ll be a member of Newsela’s Content team. Your job will be to crack open the amazing nonfiction articles we produce daily and unleash the learning. At Newsela, we believe quizzes shouldn’t just be a way to verify students did the reading. A good quiz teaches while it tests. With you at the helm, Newsela’s assessments will expand young minds and give teachers long-awaited, desperately needed support in the classroom to help them teach across a range of abilities.

Every day, you’ll work closely with Newsela’s editors, overseeing the creation of a high volume of quiz items and managing the process of integrating them into our system. You’ll be the one responsible for quiz item quality, and you’ll have the benefit of smart and collaborative colleagues who’ll support you and who believe in the importance of your mission.

You’ll also take on longer-term initiatives, such as developing new kinds of assessment, training new assessment writers, and creating systems to expand our assessment offerings. On the Content team, we have already produced 300 quiz sets. We intend to greatly increase that number, and we’ll count on you to develop creative and efficient systems to increase our capacity.

Newsela cares deeply about the experience of educators and students, so you’ll get ample opportunity to spend time in classrooms, consulting with teachers and observing students to help inform your work and make it as impactful as it can be.

Who You Are

  • Ideally, you’re someone with a background in assessment (especially at the K-12 levels), either as an item writer, editor or an educator who has experience administering assessments to students.
  • You’re familiar with the Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts.
  • You’ve got some kind of Web production experience – even it it’s just publishing your own blog. You must be comfortable with our Content management system and nimble in working across a range of file formats.
  • You embrace analytical thinking and have some projects in your work portfolio to demonstrate an ability to work with data.
  • On the Content team, we live and die by the deadline, and our deadlines are tight. You, too, have had some experience working in a setting where the work has to get done, come hell or high water, and have internalized the wisdom of Bravo’s Tim Gunn, “Make it work!”
  • You love words, learning and reading. You have had some editing experience, or you at least have a firm grasp of nuances of the English language and the rules of grammar and punctuation, which you obey as if they were federal law. You believe deep in your core that a high level of literacy is a key to success in life and something that all children deserve.
